Music
Students in every grade come to music class once a week. My primary purpose in the classroom is to create a learning environment where it is safe to take risks, to try something new, to puzzle out something, and to use our varied creative gifts! I teach using primarily the philosophy of Education Through Music, which emphasizes regard for others, curiosity and student directed learning through fun song-games!
Students learn to play Orff Instruments in every grade (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels), recorders in 4th grade, and guitar in 5th. Laurel also has an amazing inventory of drums and percussion which students use in music class.
Every grade has a performance once a year.
5th grade: The Thanksgiving Play in November
1st & 2nd grades: Spring Concert in March
3rd & 4th grades: Winter Concert in December
Kindergarten: KinderSTAR! in April

Choir:
Laurel Lynx Choir is a non-auditioned choir, open to all 4th and 5th grade students. Choir meets before school on Fridays. We perform our winter concert at the Barnes & Noble Book Fair in early December, and a spring concert in April. Students learn to sing two-part music as well as refine their unison singing.
