Since ancient times storytellers have told stories to pass on wisdom, engage the imagination and foster community. Our storytelling program recreates this age-old tradition, bringing together young and old to create connections, advance literacy and enrich the lives of children and volunteers alike.

Our volunteers believe that Oral storytelling is much different than reading a book aloud. Listening to stories orally told with the eye-to-eye contact, the accompanying gestures and the warmth of a gift freely given: 

•     Increase listening comprehension.
•     Increase vocabulary.
•     Develop a sense of story structure.
•     Stimulates a child’s imagination, including making mental pictures of words in sequence – this is critical to reading comprehension
•     Creates a love of story which translates into an interest in reading.
